Mail Express assists with IRS ITIN verification

  1. ITIN Application: To obtain an ITIN, an individual needs to complete Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. This form is submitted to the IRS along with the required documentation to prove the applicant's identity and foreign status. The IRS uses this information to verify the applicant's eligibility for an ITIN.

  2. Required Documents: The IRS requires specific documents to support the ITIN application or renewal. These documents are used to establish the individual's identity and foreign status. Common documents that may be accepted include:

    • Passport (the most commonly accepted document)

    • Visa issued by the U.S. Department of State

    • U.S. driver's license

    • National ID card (foreign)

    • Birth certificate (foreign)

    • School records (foreign)

  3. In-Person Verification: Some applicants may need to appear in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center or a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) office for verification. CAAs are authorized by the IRS to assist applicants in the ITIN application process and can verify the documents.

  4. Mail Verification: For applicants who submit their ITIN application by mail, the IRS will review the documents and return them to the applicant by mail after verification.

  5. Certified Copies of Documents: The IRS accepts certified copies of documents for ITIN verification. These certified copies are typically issued by the government agency that issued the original documents.

  6. Foreign Language Documents: If documents are not in English, applicants must provide a certified translation along with the original document.

  7. Validity Period: ITINs may expire if not used on a federal tax return for three consecutive years. In such cases, individuals must renew their ITINs using the same verification process.

  8. Timing: The ITIN application and verification process can take some time, so it's important to plan ahead if you need an ITIN for tax purposes.

It's important to note that ITINs are for tax purposes only and do not confer immigration status or work authorization. They are used exclusively for reporting income and fulfilling federal tax obligations.
